March Devotions
in Honor of Saint Joseph

Sunday & Wednesday: Prayer to St. Joseph,
Patron of the Universal Church

O Glorious St. Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church, we implore thee to obtain from the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, the preservation of our remnant Catholic Community and all its members, from all division, dissension, and discord. Do thou, faithful guardian of the Holy Family, grant that our spiritual family – all the members of our remnant Catholic Community – shall ever be united in the bonds of faith and charity, and shall remain always of one heart, mind and soul in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. St. Joseph, special protector of our Community, do thou guide, bless and protect us against the attacks of all our enemies and detractors. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, One God, forever, unto ages of ages. Amen.

Monday: PRAYER FOR A LIVELY FAITH

O happy, blissful St. Joseph, heir of the faith of all the Patriarchs, vouchsafe to obtain for us this beautiful and precious virtue. Increase in us a lively faith, the foundation of all sanctity, that faith without which no one can be pleasing to God. Obtain for us that faith which triumphs over all temptations of the world and conquers human respect, which can be shaken by nothing, and which is directed solely toward God. Cause us, after thine example, to live by faith, to subject our hearts and understandings to God, that one day, we may behold in Heaven what we now firmly believe on earth. Amen.

Tuesday: PRAYER OF CONFIDENCE IN ST. JOSEPH

O dear St. Joseph, faithful foster father of Jesus Christ, we devoutly come before thy sacred image and implore thine aid and intercession in our present necessity. We know and firmly believe that to thee all things are possible with God, and that the sweet Infant Jesus, Who on earth was subject to thee, His foster father, can now in Heaven refuse thee no request. Thy faithful servant, the seraphic St. Teresa, experienced this, and declared that never did she present to thee a petition that thou didst not grant; at the same time she invites all to have recourse to thee, assuring them that they will not depart from thee unconsoled. Encouraged by this promise, we fly unto thee, O holy Joseph, foster father of Jesus Christ and chaste Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, beseeching thee by the tender love thou didst bear to both, to bestow upon us thy love and mercy. Comfort us in our present trials and afflictions, and obtain for us, through Jesus and Mary, that God the Father may grant our petitions. Send up to the Heart of thy beloved Jesus but a single sigh, lovingly present to Him our requests; then we shall certainly obtain them, and be consoled in our distress. Amen.

Tuesday: PRAYERS IN HONOR OF THE
SEVEN SORROWS & SEVEN JOYS OF ST. JOSEPH

I. In honor of the First Sorrow and First Joy of St. Joseph:

O chaste Spouse of Mary most holy, glorious St. Joseph, great was the trouble and anguish of thy heart when thou wert minded to put away privately thine inviolate Spouse, yet thy joy was unspeakable when the surpassing Mystery of the Incarnation was made known to thee by the Angel! By this sorrow and this joy, we beseech thee to comfort our souls, both now and in the sorrows of our final hour, with the joy of a good life, and a holy death after the pattern of thine own, in the arms of Jesus and Mary. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

II. In honor of the Second Sorrow and Second Joy of St. Joseph:

O most blessed Patriarch, glorious St. Joseph, who wast chosen to be the foster father of the Word Made Flesh, thy sorrow at seeing the Child Jesus born in such poverty was suddenly changed into heavenly exultation, when thou didst hear the angelic hymn and beheld the glories of that resplendent night. By this sorrow and this joy, we implore thee to obtain for us the grace to pass over from life's pathway to hear the angelic songs of praise, and to rejoice in the shining splendor of celestial glory. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

III. In honor of the Third Sorrow and Third Joy of St. Joseph:

O glorious St. Joseph, thou didst faithfully obey the law of God which commanded the circumcision of the Divine Child on the eighth day after His Birth, although thy heart was pierced at the sight of the Precious Blood that was shed by our Infant Savior; but the blessed Name of Jesus gave thee new life and filled thee with quiet joy. By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us the grace to avoid every sin during life, and to die rejoicing, with the holy Name of Jesus in our hearts and on our lips. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

IV. In honor of the Fourth Sorrow and Fourth Joy of St. Joseph:

O most faithful Saint who shared the mysteries of our Redemption, glorious St. Joseph, the prophecy of Simeon concerning the future sufferings of Jesus and Mary caused thee to shudder with mortal dread, but at the same time filled thee with a blessed joy for the salvation and glorious resurrection which, as he foretold, would be attained by countless souls. By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that we may be among the number of those who, through the merits of Jesus and the intercession of Mary the Virgin Mother, are predestined to a glorious resurrection. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

V. In honor of the Fifth Sorrow and Fifth Joy of St. Joseph:

O most watchful Guardian of the Incarnate Son of God, glorious St. Joseph, what toil was thine in supporting and waiting upon the Son of the Most High God, especially in the dangerous Flight into Egypt! Yet at the same time, how thou didst rejoice to have God Himself always near thee, and to see the idols of the Egyptians fall prostrate to the ground before Him. By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us the grace to be safely guarded from the infernal tyrant, and especially that we may fly from all dangerous occasions. May every idol of earthly affection fall from our hearts, may we be wholly occupied in serving Jesus and Mary, and for them alone may we live and happily die. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

VI. In honor of the Sixth Sorrow and Sixth Joy of St. Joseph:

O glorious St. Joseph, an angel on earth, thou didst marvel to see the King of Heaven obedient to thy commands, but thy consolation in bringing Jesus out of the land of Egypt was troubled by thy fear of Herod's wicked son, Archelaus; nevertheless, being assured by the Angel, thou didst dwell in gladness at Nazareth with Jesus and Mary. By this sorrow and this joy, obtain for us that our hearts may be delivered from harmful fears, so that we may rejoice in peace of conscience, and may live in safety with Jesus and Mary, and may, like thee, die in their sweet company. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

VII. In honor of the Seventh Sorrow and Seventh Joy of St. Joseph:

O glorious St. Joseph, pattern of all holiness, when through no fault of thine own, thou didst lose the Child Jesus in Jerusalem, thou didst sorrowfully seek Him for three long days, until with great joy thou didst find Him again in the Temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors of the law. By this sorrow and this joy, we supplicate thee, with our heart upon our lips, to keep us from ever having the misfortune to lose Jesus through mortal sin; but if this supreme misfortune should befall us, grant that we may seek Him with unceasing sorrow until we find Him again, ready to show us His great mercy, especially at the hour of death; so that we may pass over to enjoy His Presence in Heaven; and there, in company with thee, may we sing the praises of His Divine Mercy forever. Our Father... Hail Mary... Glory be...

Antiphon. And Jesus Himself was beginning about the age of thirty years, being (as it was supposed) the Son of Joseph.

V. Pray for us, O holy Saint Joseph,
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let Us Pray

O God, Who in Thine ineffable Providence didst vouchsafe to choose Blessed Joseph to be the Spouse of Thy most holy Mother, grant, we beseech Thee, that he whom we venerate as our protector upon earth, may be our intercessor in Heaven. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, One God, forever, unto ages of ages. Amen.

Wednesday: ACT OF CONSECRATION TO ST. JOSEPH

O dearest St. Joseph, we consecrate ourselves to thy honor and give ourselves to thee, that thou mayest always be our Father, our Protector and our Guide in the way of salvation. Obtain for us a great purity of heart, and a fervent love of the interior life. After thine example, may we do all our actions for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary! And do thou, O blessed St. Joseph, pray for us that we may share in the peace and joy of thy holy death. Amen.

Wednesday: REFLECTION ON THE VIRTUES OF ST. JOSEPH

Mary speaks: "St. Joseph was so reserved and careful in his speech that not one word ever issued from his mouth that was not good and holy, nor did he ever indulge in unnecessary or less than charitable conversation. He was most patient and diligent in bearing fatigue; he practiced extreme poverty; he was most meek in bearing injuries; he was strong and constant against my enemies; he was the faithful witness of the wonders of Heaven, being dead to the flesh and the world, living only for God and for heavenly goods, which were the only things he desired. He was perfectly conformed to the Divine Will, and so resigned to the dispositions of Heaven that he ever repeated: 'May the Will of God always be done in me!' He rarely spoke with men, but continually with God, whose Holy Will he desired above all things to perform. Wherefore, he now enjoys great glory in Heaven." (Words of Our Lady to St. Bridget of Sweden)

Wednesday: PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

O, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in thee all my interests and desires. O, St. Joseph, do assist me by thy powerful intercession and obtain for me from thy Divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. So that, having engaged here below thy heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating thee and Jesus asleep in thy arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near thy heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for me.

Bless us for time and eternity, and preserve us from every sin.

Amen.

Friday: Prayer of Pope Leo XIII to St. Joseph

O most powerful Patriarch, St. Joseph, Patron of that Universal Church which has always invoked thee in anxieties and tribulations; from the lofty seat of thy glory, lovingly regard the Catholic world. Let it move thy paternal heart to see the Mystical Spouse of Christ and His Vicar weakened by sorrow and persecuted by powerful enemies. We beseech thee, by the most bitter suffering thou didst experience on earth, to wipe away in mercy the tears of the Reverend Pontiff, to defend and sustain Him, and to intercede with the Giver of peace and charity, that every hostile power being overcome and every error destroyed, the whole Church may serve the God of all blessings in perfect liberty: ut destructis adversitatibus et erroribus, universis Ecclesia secua Deus serviat libertate. Amen.

Saturday: Prayer to St. Joseph the Worker

Glorious Saint Joseph, pattern of all who are devoted to toil, obtain for me the grace to toil in the spirit of penance, in order thereby to atone for my many sins; to toil conscientiously, putting devotion to duty before my own inclinations; to labor with thankfulness and joy, deeming it an honor to employ and to develop, by my labor, the gifts I have received from Almighty God; to work with order, peace, moderation, and patience without ever shrinking from weariness and difficulties; to work above all with a pure intention and with detachment from self, having always before my eyes the hour of death and the accounting which I must then render of time ill spent, of talents unemployed, of good undone, and of my empty pride in success, which is so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all through Mary, all in imitation of thee, O Patriarch Joseph! This shall be my motto in life and in death. Amen.

Saturday: Collect for the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker

Let us Pray. O God, the Creator of all things, Who didst frame the law of labor for the human race, graciously grant that, by the example and patronage of Saint Joseph, may do the work Thou hast appointed, and earn the reward which Thou dost promise. Through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the Unity of the Holy Ghost, One God, forever, unto ages of ages. Amen.

Saturday: PRAYER FOR PERSONS WHO HAVE A LABORIOUS OCCUPATION

O Blessed Joseph, who passed thy life in the painful labors of a humble profession, we take thee as our model and our protector. Obtain for us that we may bear patiently the pains and fatigues of our state, so that sanctifying our labors like thee, we may also like thee merit a crown in Heaven. Amen.

Hymn:

Hail, holy Joseph, hail! Chaste spouse of Mary, hail!
Pure as the lily flow'r in Eden's peaceful vale.
Hail, holy Joseph, hail! Prince of the house of God!
May His best graces be, by thy sweet hands bestowed.

Hail, holy Joseph, hail! Teach us our flesh to tame!
And, Mary, keep the hearts, that love thy spouse's name.
Mother of Jesus! bless, and bless, ye saints on high.
All meek and simple souls, that to Saint Joseph cry.

Hail Holy Joseph, hail! God's choice wert thou alone.
To thee the Word Made Flesh was subject as a son.
Hail Holy Joseph, hail! Father of Christ esteemed.
Father be thou to those, thy Foster Son redeemed.
